Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • Prysmian is the world leader in the energy and telecom cable systems industry with more than 150 years of experience and a mission to accelerate the transition to clean energy. Prysmian is a global company with its U.S. headquarters in Cincinnati and currently operates in more than 50 countries.

In North America the company has nearly 6,000 employees, 28 manufacturing facilities, 8 distribution centers and 6 research and development labs. The company currently serves a significant share of utilities and clean energy producers in the United States, including the Hudson Transmission Project, which delivers clean energy to 800,000 homes in New York.

  • Prysmian is proposing to build the first offshore wind cable manufacturing facility in Massachusetts at the site of a decommissioned coal-fired power plant in Somerset to support offshore wind power and a transition to clean energy.

The proposal consists of a state-of-the-art cable manufacturing plant with an accessary docking facility – new inshore platform, in-water cable delivery system, outshore platform and fixed dolphin structures. The cable will be produced in the factory and the docking facility components allow the finished high voltage subsea power cable to be transferred from the factory to the cable laying vessel for delivery and installation.

  • The facility will generate millions of dollars in new annual tax revenue to help stabilize property taxes for Somerset residents and fund vital services for the Town. The project will also create 50-80 construction jobs and approximately 300 permanent, high-paying jobs when all phases are complete.

  • Prysmian will ensure that all construction activity will meet all Somerset noise and air quality bylaws as well as all state and federal permit regulations.

Since the launch of the project, Prysmian has prioritized engagement with the local community and has held numerous meetings with Somerset residents, local neighbors, and various boards and commissions. The company has worked closely with Somerset officials to develop a sustainable plan for the building of the manufacturing facility at Brayton Point and has actively engaged with local residents and stakeholders to address concerns.

Prysmian has continued to listen to community feedback and concerns and as a result, has made additional, meaningful changes to the project including the following:

Converting its entire fleet to shore-to-ship power – meaning a ship receives power from a source on land, enabling it to turn off diesel engines while docked. This is a first-of-its-kind undertaking, which will make Prysmian unique in the global market.

Allowing no more than one leased ship per year without shore-to-ship power to dock at Brayton Point until 2040, when shore-to-ship power is adopted industry-wide. That one leased vessel would be on-site for 7-10 days.

Ensuring that construction will meet all Somerset noise and air quality bylaws as well as all state and federal permit regulations.

Prysmian will continue to act as a good, responsive neighbor and looks forward to playing a positive role in the community.

  • An appeal has been filed, which has temporarily delayed the purchase of the Brayton Point property. This appeal is part of the permitting process, and we are confident it will be adjudicated swiftly. Prysmian’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Somerset not only meets all environmental guidelines but is a key component of the region’s clean energy future. We remain fully committed to completing this process and beginning construction as soon as possible.
